Victoria by the Sea
PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND, CANADA
On the south shore of Prince Edward Island, lies a tiny community called Victoria by the Sea with 4 streets and a population of .under 200 people. In the summer months, with tourism, the number of people can easily double.
It’s located between the two main cities of PEI, Summerside and Charlottetown, with a drive of about 30 minutes from each city respectively.
Although I live on this beautiful Island, I’ve never extensively visited this area, and I will need to come back again next summer to experience it even more fully.
I spread my visit over two days. On day one, I toured around with one of my girlfriends, and on day 2 with my son.
Let me recap what I loved so much about these little day trips. Everything from the hospitality, outdoor activities, the food, and the shopping.
You’ll find links to my favourite spots and an entire photo gallery at the end of this article.
In the photo gallery, you’ll have access to Buy Prints, Buy Greeting Cards, Download Prints, send Free eCards, and share all photos on social media.
But first, if you didn’t catch the video in the header image of this article, make sure to watch it below.
It didn’t seem to matter what establishment I entered, everyone was super friendly. As a blogger, I often go out of my way to speak to the owners and if they’re not around, I have a great chat with the staff. It didn’t matter if i was buying or not, we had great chats, I learned about the stores and the community, and left feeling “connected”.
Paul (I think that’s his name) at By the Sea Kayaking is a stand up guy. I had the pleasure of coming to his rental facility last year with a group and we rented kayaks and paddleboards. The prices are reasonable and the location is ideal. You can also rent bikes.
Food… Really Good Food!
There are 3 or 4 main restaurants to choose from in this community. On my two day visit, I visited The Lobster Barn and Island Chocolates.
The Lobster Barn
The Lobster Barn is owned by twin sisters and came highly recommended by locals. While there, we bumped into a prominent Charlottetown restaurant owner/chef and he had no qualms in telling us that The Lobster Barn has the best Lobster Roll sandwich on the Island.
Since I’m allergic to shellfish (bummer), I opted for the fish n’ chips and I truly wasn’t disappointed. It was the lightest crispiest fisn n’ chips I’ve ever had. The fish was very fresh and even the fries were on par. The iced tea was also pretty tasty!
If you drop by, say hi from me and if Matthew is still waiting tables, make sure to request him. He was superb!
Chocolate… Need I say more?
Make sure you watch the video. In it, Eric, the owner’s son, gives us a demo and we got to taste some hot 80% pure chocolate dripping off a spoon!
The chocolates are all handmade, the coffee is divine and the cheesecake is to-die-for. If you want an extra special treat, order the Factory Coffee. It’s a chocolate lined cup, filled with coffee, and topped with whipped cream.
Quaint & Unique Shops
There are so many lovely shops to explore on your visit here and they are all filled with very unique items, many of them made right here on Prince Edward Island.
Emmett & Ellie’s was awesome and she makes handmade soap. I got the Spearmint one and it definately gives a squeaky clean feel. The store is also home to some local jewelry and beach and seaside themed home decor.
b is filled with funky clothing and decor from around the world.
Moe from the Bittersweet Rose is a Bostonian, but lives 6 months in Victoria and 6 months in Boston. Her shop is filled with very neat decor and jewelry. I loved the locally built birdhouse!
And finally, I visited The Sea Nest where she makes handmade candles with red Island sand. There were also some other decorative items and some hand knitted stockings!
Even though I didn’t attend this year, I’d be hard up to not mention the Victoria Playhouse. It’s the longest running small theatre on PEI and hosts plays and musical performances. Several different acts are presented throughout the summer months, so make sure to check out the schedule. (links at the end of this post)
